Can a $50, 26‑year‑old POD 2.0 still hang with today’s best, multi‑thousand‑dollar amp modelers?
In this video I’m putting the POD 2.0 head‑to‑head against three modern heavyweights:
• Line 6 Helix Stadium XL
• Fractal Audio FM9 Turbo
• Neural DSP Quad Cortex
This is a blind shootout. You’ll hear multiple rounds of tones, but you won’t know which box you’re listening to until the reveal.
Here’s how I kept it fair:
• Same amp: Soldano 100 model on every unit
• Same CAB: identical IR inside the DAW
• Same levels: carefully level‑matched
• No special EQ
• No compression, reverb, or external processing
• No “mix magic” — just raw amp modeling
The idea isn’t to crown a single winner or trash anyone’s favorite box. The goal is to test our assumptions about “old vs new” and see how close a 26‑year‑old POD can get to the flagship modelers we obsess over today.
Listen on good speakers or headphones, trust your ears, and keep score as you go. By the end of this video, you might be surprised by which tones you preferred — and what that says about how far amp modeling has (or hasn’t) really come.
