Hi everyone. I decided to do an updated cover of La Villa Strangiato for my channel. The last time I did a video of this was a few years ago, and I didn't do any of the synth stuff on that video, so I've been wanting to do a new cover for a while.
This cover absolutely kicked my ass... I had originally intended to try and get most of the song done in one take, but it soon became obvious that I wasn't going to be able to so I just split the song into smaller sections, and went back to the start of that section to try again if I made a blunder. I eventually managed to get something I considered acceptable for each section, but it was a real battle, especially that middle bit which I always find very hard to play cleanly. As with all really hard songs though, they can be frustrating, but also are often the most satisfying when you finally play it well! I am always amazed by how many different versions of this song I have heard, and am still yet to hear Geddy mess up any of the bits that regularly trip me up. He really is just on another level than us mortals when it comes to bass playing...
I used the intro from the version on the Moving Pictures 40th Anniversary live set, and then from the first verse it is the Time Machine version. I really like the old intro with the slow build up adding all the synth layers in bit by bit, so I wanted to include that section on my cover, but the bass and guitar separation works far better on the Time Machine version than Rush's 80s live stuff, so it worked out best to use that for the rest of the song. The footage of Rush in my video are from the official live performance of the song from 1978 ( • Rush - La Villa Strangiato ) and the Time Machine tour video, using the video uploaded by @MysticRhythmsLive which you can find here: • Rush ~ La Villa Strangiato ~ Time Machine ...
I bought a Behringer Toro a while ago when it was on sale from a music store and have played around with it a little bit, but never had the chance to use it in a video. I decided to use it for all the Taurus pedal parts on this song, and honestly I was pretty surprised with how good it sounded (considering how cheap it was!). It does the Taurus pedal sounds really well, and is really straightforward to use. The rest of the synth stuff is on my @GrooveSynthesis 3rd Wave and I based the patches on the Time Machine tour version with the phaser effect during the guitar solos in the middle.
This is such a great song, and such a challenging one to play, and I suspect I will be playing it (and screwing it up!) for as long as I play bass. Thanks to Rush for being crazy and talented enough to put together a song that is so exciting to listen to, and even more so to play!
Hope you enjoy
