Based on pulmonary function tests Chronic Noninfectious Diffuse Pulmonary Diseases
Obstructive diseases and Restrictive diseases
Based on pulmonary function tests, chronic noninfectious diffuse pulmonary diseases can be classified in one of two categories: (1) obstructive diseases (or airway diseases), characterized by an increase in resistance to airflow due to partial or complete obstruction at any level, from the trachea and larger bronchi to the terminal and respiratory bronchioles
In obstructive pulmonary disorders, It is difficult to expel all of the air from the lungs. This becomes worse with activity, because when the Respiratory rate increases, it becomes challenging to blow out all of the air in the lungs before taking the next breath.
Narrowing of the airways may cause wheezing,
Inflammation causes increased mucus production (sputum).
Expiratory airflow obstruction may be seen in : Chronic bronchitis, bronchial Asthma, Emphysema, Small-airway disease, bronchiolitis
Restrictive Pulmonary Diseases, Reduced expansion of lung parenchyma and decreased total lung capacity.
The problem of “Compliance” Or “Stiff lung”
Good lung “Compliance” means the lungs expand easily
Stiff lungs usually have lower volumes
Intrinsic Causes or extrinsic causes or neurological causes.
