Although the Minuet, D. 600 and Trio, D. 610 were not composed together as a set, it has often been suggested to perform these two pieces as a third movement of Schubert’s Piano Sonata in C major, D. 613, which is an unfinished work. However, this suggestion is rarely followed. The Minuet, D. 600 was written in 1813 while the Trio, D. 610 and the Sonata, D. 613 were composed in 1818. Therefore, it seems that Schubert probably did not have any intention to relate the minuet to the trio or to the sonata. In fact, Schubert described Trio, D. 610 as “to be regarded as the lost son of a minuet.” Given their key relationship and their similar characters and moods, however, the minuet and the trio seem to form a perfect match, and they are often performed together by pianists. Every time I perform this minuet and trio, I realize that music does not need to be complex and intricate to be beautiful. Sometimes simple music like this can be the most beautiful music in the world.
