Culture requires character. Rangers lead with character and culture. NCOs have the responsibility to build it. In this discussion Sergeant Major of the Army Mike Weimer and retired 75th Ranger Regiment CSM Rick Merritt with host, Fran Racioppi, move beyond policies, paychecks, and promotions and into something far more foundational. A unit’s culture is not built on slogans. It is built on individual men and women who make disciplined decisions, hold themselves accountable, and choose commitment over convenience.
Together they unpack what truly creates a strong formation. Culture begins with compliance. It grows through commitment. And at its highest level, it becomes consecration. That level of ownership does not happen by accident. It happens when leaders demand character from themselves first, then from those they serve.
The Army’s culture is described as special, the envy of the world, forged over 250 years of building leaders of character for the nation. This is the essence of the Abrams Charter. It is not about what you earn. It is about who you become.
They also highlight the Non-Commissioned Officer Corps. NCOs who could leave for more money in the civilian world stay because they see themselves as the keepers of the culture. They are not staying for financial reasons. They are staying because they are consecrated to something bigger than themselves.
