A Cochrane review found that regular physical activity may be as effective as psychological therapy in easing symptoms of depression.
When compared to antidepressant medication, exercise showed similar benefits, though the evidence was less certain.
The review analyzed data from 73 randomized trials involving nearly 5,000 adults with depression.
Exercise led to moderate reductions in depressive symptoms compared to no treatment. It produced similar improvements to psychological therapy based on moderate certainty evidence.
Comparisons with antidepressants suggested comparable effects, but the supporting evidence was limited and considered low certainty.
Light to moderate intensity activity and programs with 13-36 exercise sessions were most helpful.
Combinations of different activities and resistance training appeared more effective than aerobic exercise alone.
