Sept Proximités
VII. Hoquet
This is it, the very last of Maxime McKinley's 'Sept Proximités'! The seventh movement is Hoquet, or 'hocket' in English. And as you'll remember, every one of these movements follows a compositional technique- and a hocket is no different! This is a really cool little technique, where two or more voices alternate to create a single melody. Maxime does this super well in his Proximities- and overall, hockets are just really fun to play or sing.
Hockets turn up in Western music history around the 13th Century- and the proper term really is hoquet- literally 'hiccup', in French. So it turns up in Western music around this time, but the technique had actually been used as early as the 11th century in different folk traditions around the world. When I was researching this, I came up with so many just- delightful examples. I’ll include a link below of Francis Bebey demonstrating a Camerooni hocket with his bamboo pipe. Another one I love is the beginning of Herbie Hancock’s Watermelon Man, a classic example- and of course, the clapping in Spanish flamenco!
Stay tuned- the complete video of McKinley's Sept Proximités will be up sometime this week!
