Naltrexone and bupropion, in formulations not readily available in Australia, reduced methamphetamine use compared to placebo. We undertook a pilot study to examine an oral formulation of naltrexone and bupropion. We conducted a single-arm, open-label, pilot study of oral naltrexone and bupropion (40mg/450mg daily in divided doses) in adults with methamphetamine use disorder. Participants were outpatients of a stimulant treatment program in Sydney, Australia. Participants attended weekly for 12 weeks, and received treatment as usual psychosocial therapy. Primary outcomes were feasibility, study medication adherence, and safety. Participants completed qualitative interviews to examine the acceptability of the treatment.

Their current research focuses on marginalised populations and their clinical outcomes including interventions to address methamphetamine use disorder through clinical trials of pharmacotherapies (lisdexamfetamine, psilocybin, naltrexone-bupropion, ketamine) and a smartphone application. Liam works on a broad range of clinical research projects with mixed-methods techniques, and has started an independent program of research investigating the intersection of sleep and substance use.
