Living in urban areas with a higher percentage of visible trees is associated with a 4% decrease in cardiovascular disease risk.
Living in urban areas with a higher percentage of grass or other green spaces (e.g. bushes, shrubs) is associated with a 6% and 3% increase in cardiovascular disease risk, respectively.
The study used machine learning to analyze over 350 million street view images to estimate the amount of different types of green space in neighborhoods.
The findings suggest that urban forestry initiatives to preserve and plant more trees may provide greater cardiovascular health benefits compared to investments in grass planting.
The study adds to growing evidence that the natural environment in urban areas can impact public health, and highlights the importance of disaggregating different types of greenspace when assessing health impacts. | #Trees #lowerheartdiseaserisk #cities #grassandothergreenery #health #healthnews #medicine #medical #medicalnews #healthcare
