Today is the Thirty-third Sunday in Ordinary Time. We have reached the last two weeks of the liturgical year. How has your year been? Let us start reflecting on this as we also approach the conclusion of civil year.

In today’s Gospel, Jesus describes the events that will signal the coming of the Son of Man. There will be a tribulation and movements in the sky and the heavens. Then the Son of Man will come “in the clouds,” powerful and glorious. The angels will be sent out to gather God’s chosen people.

Yet the Lord stresses to his disciples: That day will come. He will come, he is near. And Jesus uses the image of a fig tree: “When its branch becomes tender and sprouts leaves, you know that summer is near.”

We see trees everywhere but do we pay attention to how bit by bit, day by day they signal a change that is near. Instead of looking for spectacular events we must pay attention to the ordinary things around us. Do we see how near Jesus is to us?
