This series of eight paintings is rooted in the idea of return
traveling not toward something new, but back toward something essential. Each work considers what we carry, what we defend, and what quietly defines us as we move through vast, open
spaces. The figures are small against the landscape, yet resolute, shaped as much by the land as by their own internal compass.
Set within the quiet majesty of the American West, these scenes are not narratives of conquest or escape, but of endurance and reflection. Riders, walkers, and solitary figures move through
expansive terrain that feels timeless and watchful. The land
becomes a psychological space as much as a physical one,
an arena where memory, responsibility, and identity unfold without spectacle. There is tension between motion and stillness,
between vulnerability and resolve.
Material plays a symbolic role in the work. The blue regions of the cloudless skies are constructed from exposed blue jean fabric, an everyday, working-class material associated with labor, travel, and durability. By embedding denim into the sky itself, the boundary
between human presence and natural environment collapses. The sky becomes something worn, carried, and lived in, an inheritance rather than an abstraction.
Visually, the works balance impressionistic gesture with graphic clarity. Brushwork suggests movement, wind, and distance, while simplified forms and controlled color relationships give the scenes a quiet, iconic weight. This tension mirrors the subject matter:
personal histories set against landscapes that vastly out scale
individual lives. The figures stand, ride, or walk forward not to conquer the land, but to find themselves within it.
