After the success of Evil Dead II, Sam Raimi wanted to make a superhero movie and he was keen to adapt the pulp magazine series, The Shadow. When his efforts were rebuffed, he went on to create his own superhero who was more of a mutant mix of Frankenstein’s Monster, Batman, and the Invisible Man. Starring Liam Neeson as the protagonist, this superhero was something we had never seen before as he transformed from his bleak depression to incandescent rage. The narrative is a bit of a mix of Gothic horror and science fiction. It feels dangerous and alive, and the thrill in the storytelling is pretty unique. When the flick released in 1990, it was surprisingly loved by audiences and Darkman’s breed of vengeance ensured that nobody could predict what to expect next. The success prompted a couple of sequels, but Sam Raimi only worked as an executive producer for the two Direct-to-Video follow-ups.
