The song was originally written as an instrumental piece and titled 'Silent Story'. Parts of the melody is based on a traditional Irish tune (especially the opening phrase of its chorus), the Londonderry Air, which is also known as the tune of the 1910 song Danny Boy.

'You raise me up' was originally composed and released by 'Secret Garden', a Eurovision Song Contest winning instrumental duo. The music was written by its Norwegian pianist Rolf Løvland and the lyrics by Brendan Grahaman, an Irish novelist and songwriter. The singer of the Secret Garden song was Norwegian Jan Werner Danielsen. This song was released in 2001.

The song later was recorded by more than a hundred other artists, although the original Secret Garden version did not chart internationally. Most popular of those versions are Josh Groban's and Westlife's.
