For newcomers, combat fishing below the confluence of the Russian and Kenai rivers can be an intimidating experience. Here's some advice for wading out among the crowd to catch the highly-prized sockeye salmon:
This is a fly fishing zone, so try a fly rod (8 weight) with floating line. Not required, but perfect for "flipping and flossing for reds."
Use heavy line (30-pound test), long leader (at least 4 to 6 feet) and a tight drag to control fish during the battle.
Tie on a "coho fly" with a hook gap of not more than 3/8 inch.
Attach enough weight to tap bottom during the drift.
Don't wade too far from shore. These fish like to run shallow.
Cast 45 degrees upriver into the silty Kenai. As the line passes by and the weight begins to tap bottom, slowly pull across the current while keeping the rod tip low and pointed at an angle downstream.
If there's a sudden tug or feeling of resistance, set the hook. To prevent snagging salmon in the body, don't give a hard jerk at the end of the drift.
Most fish will be found along the seam where the clear Russian meets the silty Kenai.
Observe the techniques of successful anglers and ask for help if needed. The majority of folks are happy to assist.
Good luck!!!
