Building with Mud with Local Communities in Jamshedpur

Set in a village near Jamshedpur, this project re-examines traditional wisdom to design contemporary zero-energy buildings, learning from ancient forts and vernacular homes that endure through time using stone, mud, and timber. Envisioned by Bikrant Tiwari, the landscape becomes collaborative: six villas sit lightly within trees, accompanied by a bamboo meditation pavilion, organic kitchen, craft gallery, tea deck, and rain-fed water body.

The project grows with people as much as with soil. Local tribal and artisan communities participate in building, exchanging skills and reviving nearly forgotten techniques. Mud construction offers thermal comfort, affordability, and low environmental impact, aligning with a circular philosophy—reduce waste, reuse materials, regenerate nature which ultimately frames sustainability as cultural continuity: architecture that heals land while empowering those who build it.
