It is with both sadness and joy that we announce the death of Father Scott Young. October 2, 2025 was a great day for Scott and a sad day for all of those who know him. Scott was born December 12, 1961 in Etobicoke, baptized at Nativity of Our Lord Parish on January 14, 1962, and ordained to the priesthood for the Archdiocese of Toronto on May 11, 1991. Scott is predeceased by his parents, Cecil and Jeanne Young, and by his brothers Donald and Brian. Scott had cousins in the north on his Mother’s side, and in Prince Edward County on his Father’s side. His cousin Lynda from Sudbury was able to be at his side when he passed.

Scott grew up in a loving home in Etobicoke and enjoyed friendships with many people from elementary, secondary school and University. He was a member of the Nativity of Our Lord Parish and had wonderful stories to tell about his days there. Scott attended Vincent Massey Collegiate and was a graduate of University of Toronto, Mississauga. He continued to connect with people from the early days even in the past five years.

Father Scott served as Associate and then Pastor at St. Mary’s Parish in Brampton and then Pastor at St. Christopher‘s Parish in Mississauga. He was in residence at St. Mary’s Parish in Barrie since January 2022.

Scott was a lover of God, of scripture, of debate, of reading, of music, of gardening, of travel, of food, storytelling and God’s people. Scott had a gift of retaining facts and tidbits of stories he read daily.

He was an avid stamp collector, and enjoyed gardening so much each summer; he weeded the gardens and lawns with a dedication that impressed many. The hours he spent on his knees were often spent in prayer. Scott took delight in being mistaken for the gardener and not the pastor. He made a great impact on the gardens, in each parish in which he served over the years. Gardening gave others an opportunity to stop and chat with Scott. In him they found a listening ear, wise words and some helpful tips for a good garden.

Scott enjoyed the planning of travel as much as the actual touring. He really disliked the process of getting to the place where you traveled – the cramped process of flying on an airplane was considered a necessary evil. At the end of each trip once he was off the plane he would announce I am not flying again … for a very long time.

With a joyful humor and a compassionate spirit, Scott ministered to, and had a great impact upon many families in the parishes he served. Late night sessions in parishioners’ homes with a pot of tea, or on trips to Israel, bringing the scriptures to life, Scott shared stories and became great friends with many people. Scott did not hesitate to strike up a conversation with someone in an airport, on the beach or in a restaurant. Inevitably he would discover they shared one or more friends in common.

Scott was diagnosed as a type one diabetic in his parish internship year at Saints Peter and Paul in Mississauga. Since that time his dietary discipline has ebbed and flowed. His enthusiasm for enjoying fine food and good wine meant that sometimes he would ‘cheat’ on his diet.

In recent years Scott dealt with a series of health issues. He worked to live within the limitations caused by chronic health issues continuing to serve at St. Mary’s Parish in Barrie. Scott’s last days were spent in the ICU at RVH in Barrie. He received the best care the medical team could offer.

Although we may feel Father Scott Young left us too soon, we know he will continue to join us in prayer.
