Mara's once playful and innocent spirit was nearly extinguished by vicious, relentless beating and abuse at the hands of vile people. The trauma to her delicate skull was SO severe that it fractured the teeth at the back of her mouth. These broken remnants of a once joyful smile had to be surgically removed, leaving her unable to chew without wincing in pain. But the damage didn’t stop there. One of her front legs was broken so badly that it was hanging by a thread by the time we got to her.

After rescuing her from the local shelter so that she could get the medical care she deserves, for months, we fought alongside Mara, clinging to the hope that we could save her shattered leg. Weekly cast changes, endless vet visits, and countless sleepless nights. We held our breath, praying for a miracle that never came. Despite all our efforts, the bone in her leg refused to heal. The break was too severe, the damage done by those disgusting humans was too deep. Now, the only option left to save Mara from a lifetime of agony is to amputate her leg.

Mara’s journey has been filled with pain, yet through it all, her spirit has remained unbroken. This is such an amazing feat considering her beginnings. Mara is part of an active, ongoing investigation of cruelty, so we can't reveal too many details. However, we can say that she was so badly abused that local authorities found it pertinent to step in and take action. We are heartbroken that this is her trauma, but it is what gets us up every morning—knowing she needs us, as many pups do, to see to it that their future is NOTHING like their past.

Sweet, sweet Mara still wags her tail, still looks up at us with those trusting eyes, still believes in the goodness of the world—despite every reason not to. This sweet, loving puppy has every right to be afraid, to mistrust, to shut down. But Mara chooses love, even after being shown the very worst of humanity. She is an inspiration to us all, truly.

But now we must fight. We are facing the daunting reality of yet another extensive surgery. The cost of the amputation, combined with the ongoing medical care she desperately needs, is overwhelming. We need to raise between $1,100 and $1,900 to give Mara a chance at a life free from pain. A life where she can run on three legs, instead of being crippled by the weight of a broken one.
