This adorable bank vole can be identified by its short tail, about half the length of its body. Similar looking animals such as mice have tails that are the same length as their body, making the bank vole easy to spot when one is out and about. This video shows one taking a wander through some logs placed there by beavers the previous night.
Bank voles (Myodes glareolus) are small, forest-dwelling rodents common throughout much of Europe and parts of Asia. They're typically associated with woodlands, hedgerows, and dense vegetation—but interestingly, they are sometimes found living in or around beaver lodges as well.
Beaver lodges provide a complex structure of sticks, logs, and mud, ideal cover for small mammals like bank voles. These structures offer protection from predators and harsh weather, much like deadwood or dense underbrush would in a forest.
