The Blue-Chinned Parrotfish (scientific name: Scarus ghobban) gets its Latin name from the Arabic word ghobban, used to describe its vibrant colors. These fish are found in warm, tropical oceans all over the world, especially around coral reefs and rocky shores like those in the Galapagos. They are famous for their "beak" (like a parrot), which they use to scrape algae off rocks. This diet is very important because when they eat, they grind up rock and coral and poop it out as white sand, helping to create the beaches.
They live a busy lifestyle, swimming during the day and sleeping in a "bubble" of mucus at night for protection. Interestingly, they can change their sex from female to male as they grow older! They usually live for about 5 to 8 years. Today, climate change and warming oceans are a threat because they damage the coral reefs these fish call home. However, because they eat algae, they are actually "reef doctors" that help keep the underwater environment healthy and clean.
