Hi everyone! My name is Dan, and I am a veterinarian.
Today I am talking about intervertebral disc disease in dogs, and when is back surgery needed? Of course your veterinarian will make this call for you, but in this video I try to give some insight.
Your veterinarian will do a neurologic exam to assess how serious the disc disease is. There are three things your veterinarian will look for: Proprioception, Motor Function, Superficial Pain, and Deep Pain. Based on the amount of spinal cord disease, your veterinarian will pick either medical management or surrey.
There are curtain dog breeds that are more predisposed to having back disease or intervertebral disease disease (IVDD). These dogs are labeled as chondrodystrophic. Dogs like French Bull dogs and Dachshunds are included in this grooming.
If your veterinarian thinks your dog will benefit from surgery, they will send you to see a veterinary specialist. This veterinary specialist will complete back surgery to help your doggy recover. This procedure is call a hemilaminectomy.
Because imaging like the MRI is commonly used now and veterinary surgeons are really good at performing the hemilaminectomy.
