One in a series of seminars presented as part of The Paley Center for Media's 2025 Fall TV Previews PALEYFEST events. Recorded virtually, this evening celebrates "Devil in Disguise: John Wayne Gacy," Peacock's eight-episode mini-series about the infamous American serial killer.
Debra Birnbaum (editor, Gold Derby) moderates the following panelists: executive producer/showrunner Patrick Macmanus; and cast members Michael Chernus (John Wayne Gacy), Gabriel Luna (Rafael Tovar), and Marin Ireland (Elizabeth Piest).
The panelists touch on such topics as: how Macmanus got past hesitations to produce a mini-series on a subject that might seem salacious and/or gratuitous to viewers; the method for telling Gacy's story in a new way that showcased victims' stories as well as those of detectives on the case; Chernus's initial fears about playing Gacy and questioning if the show would duly honor Gacy's victims; the longtime friendship between Ireland and Chernus, and how that led to her joining the production; the "miraculous turn of events" that made Luna thankful for the opportunity to work alongside "Devils" cast and crew; the immense amount of research that preceded the start of the mini-series; the cast's contributions to make the scripts as accurate as possible; Chernus's ongoing fear of embodying Gacy and why he ultimately played up Gacy's charm and appeal; the actors' pact "to tether each other" to deal with the more intense moments' emotional baggage; and the toughest scene for each panelist to film.
