Just a few kilometres away from the famous neighbour in Maranello, the first Lamborghinis came into the world at Sant’Agata Bolognese from 1963. These distinguished cars were the 350 GT and the 400 GT. The front-engine GTs powered by a V12 engine were beautiful cars but they were nothing special to unsettle Ferrari just down the road. However, the third model – the Miura – was a super sports car that appeared as if from another world. The first mid-engine motor car came just two years after the automotive enterprise had been established. The transversely mounted power unit was positioned in front of the rear axle, a concept that famed engine designer Gioachino Colombo had deployed for the first time in the Bugatti 251 racing car in 1956. The Miura was a smash hit right from the start and the enthusiasm was not simply down to the innovative concept for a road-going sports car. The design of the Miura was sleek and quite simply mind-blowing, making it the shining lodestar at the Turin Salon in 1965. The design had been penned by Marcello Gandini, just 27 years old. Lamborghini was completely overwhelmed with the orders. Although the first Lamborghini Miura models in the form of the P400 and the S still had to contend with teething problems, there was simply no time for fine-tuning and quality assurance in the first cars to roll out of the factory gates. The cockpit had no air-conditioning, which turned it into a hothouse, and the gear shift was clunky.
However, the most important recurring problems came about because the engine and transmission still shared a common oil supply. Despite all the drawbacks, demand knew no bounds. The Miura SV – Super Veloce – formed the pinnacle of the model series. In accordance with its Italian epithet, this car was mind-warpingly fast. Many of the details for the SV launched in 1971 were improved. This meant that the visual appearance of the SV was significantly different from the P400 and the S. The rear bumpers became more muscular in order to accommodate the wider track and bigger rear wheels.
The black ‘lashes’ around the pop-up headlamps were eliminated. The V12 engine powering the SV now delivered 385 hp and reached nearly 290 km/h (180 mph). Over the course of the production run, the power unit and the gearbox were provided with separate lubrication systems. This particular SV was sold through the Turin dealer Lamborauto in May 1972, liveried in Rosso Corsa and upholstered in Pelle Nera leather. Over the past 52 years, the high-performance sports car has only clocked up just over 25,000 kilometres and it still possesses its original interior. By the beginning of 1973, only 151 exemplars had rolled off the assembly line.
