This video is an invitation to study the harmony and the differences between Utagawa Hiroshige and his pupil Shigenobu, known as Hiroshige II. Shigenobu stood and stands in the shadow of his master Utagawa Hiroshige, but, as we are trying to show here, he certainly had his own genius.
Hiroshige I was the poetic innovator of a ukiyo‑e landscape art, famous for poetic atmosphere, radical compositions, and a refined sense of color and weather. Hiroshige II is his faithful student and imitator, a mirror of his master. After the death of his master in 1858, Shigenobu adopted his style almost seamlessly, yet developed his own subtle touches: stronger decorative tendencies, richer, more saturated colours, simplified forms and a more commercial focus. This also led to a noticeable decline in the quality of his prints. His compositions are often less bold and less experimental than the late works of Hiroshige I. In the video you can discover the harmony and the differences between the two geniuses.
