If you have a permanent and total disability rating, it means that your condition is not expected to improve over time and that you will need to receive treatment and/or benefits for the rest of your life. While some conditions may improve enough that you are able to return to work, others may not.
There are a few different ways that a disability can be classified as permanent:
1. The VA has rated your disability as Permanent & Total (P&T). This is the highest level of disability rating given by the VA, and it means that your condition is so severe that it prevents you from working entirely. In order to be eligible for P&T status, you must have one or more service-connected disabilities that are rated at 60% or higher, or two or more service-connected disabilities that add up to 70% or higher.
2. You have a condition that the VA has determined is terminal. This means that your condition is not expected to improve and will eventually lead to your death.
3. You have a condition that the VA has determined is permanent and non-service connected. This means that your condition is not related to your military service, but it is still considered to be permanent and cannot be improved.
If you think you may qualify for permanent disability status, it's important to reach out to the VA and discuss your options.
