Six years ago, 44 elite Special Action Force (SAF) troopers of the Philippine National Police (PNP) selflessly sacrificed their lives for our nation, our freedom, and for the future of our children, as they fought and stood their ground despite being trapped, outnumbered, and outgunned by enemy forces in the far fields of Mamasapano in Maguindanao.
In honor of the gallant SAF 44, PNP Chief Police General Debold M Sinas together with DPWH Secretary Mark A. Villar led the Wreath Laying Ceremony which marked the Day of National Remembrance for the 44 SAF troopers at SAF Memorial Park, Camp Bagong Diwa, Taguig City.
Families and relatives of the fallen SAF 44 troopers also witnessed the said ceremony.
“What greater love can a man show to his country than to lay down his life for her sake? May this day be a reminder to every one of us - the values that we shared and the resilience that we showed despite facing grave danger. Gallant SAF 44 legacy will forever live on. We are all very proud of you,” said Mrs. Roselle Nacino, wife of late Police Corporal Nicky Nacino Jr., in her message.
Also present at the Wreath Laying Ceremony were SAF Director Police Major General Bernabe M Balba and National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO) Director Police Major General Vicente D Danao Jr.
In his message, DPWH Secretary Villar expressed his highest respect and admiration to the fallen SAF 44 for their bravery and heroism.
“Let us all hope that this recognition will invigorate and fuel our police officers and uniformed personnel in performing their respective duties and responsibilities, and renewing your commitment to excellence and of course continuing their love for our country,” Villar added.
On January 25, 2015, the 44 SAF troopers perished as they encountered rebels and private armed groups in Mamasapano, Maguindanao after neutralizing Malaysian terrorist bomb-maker Zulkifli Abdhir or Marwan.
Marwan was tagged responsible for training Filipinos in urban terrorism and in making improvised explosive devices, which were later used in a series of bomb attacks, especially in Mindanao.
President Rodrigo Duterte issued Presidential Proclamation No. 164 on February 21, 2017, declaring January 25 of every year as the National Day of Remembrance in honor of the Fallen SAF 44.
