In the Arctic not only does Spring arrive weeks–if not months–later than more southerly latitudes, we lack the amount and variety of plants that usually give visual cues of the change, such as new leaves and early spring flowers. In Finnmark we have even less trees than other areas of Norway and our first flowers are in May, so it is not always apparent how far along the season has progressed. However, keeping an eye on the condition of our ubiquitous snow and ice gives the equivalent information if you pay attention. In general we have the most ice in the late autumn and early spring and I really love it. Not only does it bring the most interesting formations but it is rather noisy and fun! Ice crackling and splintering underfoot, thawing and refreezing overnight, snow melting, excess water gushing down slopes and the sound of dripping everywhere. It can be a real symphony if you attune your hearing.
Today’s ecotherapy tip involves listening to the sounds of spring, but it can be adapted to all times of year. The main intention is a mindfulness moment that brings our awareness to the present and anchors us to place. Whatever the season in your part of the world take a little time outdoors just listening to the specific seasonal sounds and what they communicate to your mind and body. Most of us mentally filter out the background sounds of the place we live, but they do have a strong effect on our wellbeing nonetheless.
The sounds of spring, like birdsong and flowing water, have been shown to positively impact wellbeing by reducing stress, improving mood, and enhancing cognitive function. Exposure to these sounds can trigger the release of endorphins, reduce cortisol levels, and lower blood pressure, promoting a state of relaxation. Additionally, engaging with nature through its sounds can improve attention and concentration, leading to better cognitive performance.
Here’s a more detailed look at the benefits :
♪ Reduced Cortisol Levels : Studies have demonstrated that exposure to natural sounds, particularly bird songs and flowing water, can lower cortisol, the hormone associated with stress.
♪ Lowered Blood Pressure and Heart Rate : The soothing sounds of nature have been shown to decrease blood pressure and slow heart rate, contributing to a sense of calm.
♪ Muscle Relaxation : The relaxation response induced by natural sounds can lead to a decrease in muscle tension, further promoting a state of wellbeing.
♪ Endorphin Release : Listening to nature sounds, especially birdsong, can stimulate the release of endorphins, which are natural mood boosters and can reduce feelings of anxiety and depression.
♪ Improved Mood : Research has shown that exposure to natural sounds, like the sounds of nature, can improve overall mood and increase feelings of positive emotions.
♪ Increased Calmness : The calming effect of natural sounds can help individuals experience a greater sense of peace and tranquility.
♪ Improved Attention and Focus : Studies have found that engaging with nature’s sounds, like birdsong and the movement of water, can enhance attention span and working memory.
♪ Sharper Cognitive Function : The calming effect of natural sounds can lead to improved cognitive performance, allowing individuals to focus better and perform tasks more efficiently.
♪ Increased Awareness and Appreciation of Nature : Engaging with the sounds of spring can foster a deeper appreciation for the natural world and a stronger connection to it.
♪ Improved Sleep : Exposure to nature sounds can also promote better sleep, as the calming and relaxing effects of nature can help individuals fall asleep faster and sleep more soundly.
