Romat is a vibrant, traditional folk dance and ceremonial procession native to Goa. It is one of the most prominent and high-energy spectacles during Shigmo (Shigmotsav), the Goan spring and harvest festival.
Here are the key characteristics of a traditional Romat:
Processional Nature: Unlike stationary stage dances, Romat is a dynamic, moving street performance. Large groups of villagers march and dance together, typically starting from the village maand (a traditional sacred gathering space) and moving toward the main village temple or a neighboring village to exchange greetings.
High-Energy Music: The procession is driven by the loud, rhythmic, and synchronized beating of traditional percussion instruments, most notably the dhol (large drum), tasha (snare-like drum), and kasale (cymbals).
Spectacular Visuals: Performers dress in bright, colorful traditional attire. The procession is visually striking, featuring huge ceremonial banners, colorful flags, ornate umbrellas (adabgiris), festooned sticks, and batons.
Cultural Significance: Romat serves as a community thanksgiving to the local deities for a successful agricultural season and a celebration of the arrival of spring. It is deeply rooted in Goa's agrarian history and local traditions.
