David was well into an unforgettable 15-day journey along the Dutch waterways and the Rhine and
Moselle Rivers on the ultra-luxurious Scenic Pearl. The cruise offered a perfect blend of history,
culture, and pure relaxation.
The next stop was Antwerp, Belgium's largest port city, which proved to be a delightful surprise. Its
rich history and folklore were captivating, from the ancient Het Steen fortress which has greeted
sailors for centuries, to the magnificent Butcher’s Hall. The city's stunning cathedral, with priceless
Rubens artworks was a true highlight. The Scenic Freechoice craft beer and chocolate pairing
unexpectedly showed that Belgium's renowned liquid amber and delicious chocolate are indeed a
match made in heaven!
Life on board Scenic Pearl was an experience in itself. True to its name, the Scenic Space-Ship
offered an abundance of space, from the upper deck to the luxurious suites, providing ample
opportunities to simply watch the world glide by. The butler service in each suite added an extra touch of luxury, making sailing days truly delightful interruptions – a chance for guests to rest and rejuvenate as the magnificent river scenery unfolded before them.
Leaving Belgium behind, Scenic Pearl travelled through the waterways of The Netherlands leading to the Rhine. Along the way David toured the 17th century Het Loo Palace near Arnhem. The grand
property has undergone a massive restoration and gave a fascinating insight into royal life including
ornate bedrooms, dining halls, gardens and an impressive collection of royal vehicles.
Gliding into Germany, the fascinating city of Düsseldorf was ready to delight and amuse with modern architecture like the Frank Gehry buildings on one side and the Old Town, steeped in rich history, on the other. St. Lambertus Basilica, a stunning 13th century gothic cathedral, has a famously twisted spire and unique stained-glass windows. David’s knowledgeable guide had many stories to impart during their walk through the Old Town, some fables, mostly history, and introduced him to the taste of Altbier. The distinct Düsseldorf dark beer is strictly made using traditional methods, and with 260 pubs in a small area that has been dubbed ‘the world’s longest bar’ David had no trouble sampling some of the different varieties and enjoying the vibrant atmosphere.
Swinging from the Rhine into the Moselle, Scenic Pearl cruised through one of Germany’s most
beautiful river valleys, a continuous canvas of rolling vineyards, ancient castles and playful riverside
scenes. Opening the windows of his balcony suite, David revealed the innovative and private Scenic
Sun Lounge, just the spot to admire the passing views.
From the medieval gem of Cochem, David hopped on an e-bike to tour along gentle landscapes past
postcard perfect vistas of half-timbered houses, Riesling vines and Reichsburg Castle. The ride
culminated in Beilstein, a village that truly felt like "peddling into a storybook," where David indulged in a delicious wine cream cake – a justifiable treat after his ride.
David’s Romantic Rhine and Moselle cruise on Scenic Pearl was more than just an ultra-luxurious trip; it was a journey through centuries of stories, witnessed and delivered by the enduring rivers
themselves. From the whimsical streets of Antwerp to the vibrant contrasts of Düsseldorf, every stop was full of fairytales, grand historical sites and charming local traditions.
