Barnes Level Crossings, Greater London

Описание: An hour at the two level crossings on Vine Road in Barnes.

A pair of level crossings located on a quiet, small road just West of Barnes Railway Station in Barnes, near Richmond in London. Both level crossings are located opposite each other around only 200 feet (60 metres) apart, and so close together because this small road passes over two diverging lines just after a junction next to the nearby railway station. Both lines take passenger trains towards/from the direction of Reading and Windsor, but one line goes via Richmond and Twickenham (the main line), and the other goes via Chiswick and Hounslow and also takes some cross-city freight towards Kew and Acton. One level crossing is located on the busy London Waterloo to Reading Line towards Richmond, and sees significantly more rail traffic than the other level crossing on the Hounslow Loop Line located next to the now long-abandoned British Railways signal box on the line towards Barnes Bridge, Chiswick, and Hounslow. There’s never long to wait for a train here!

The area appears to be located underneath a busy flight path as there were frequently aeroplanes passing overhead and making a fair bit of noise. A total of eleven different lowerings have been featured in this video, four at the Hounslow Loop Line level crossing, and seven at the busier level crossing on the London Waterloo to Reading line. A freight train kicks the video off, seen in the first full lowering featured, and there is also a number of older Class 455 Electric Multiple Units featured whose days may be numbered in their operations for South Western Railway (these ended service with Southern back in May 2022 but are still quite abundant with South Western Railway on their Metro routes). One of the audible alarms on the Hounslow Loop Line level crossing was quite new when these videos were filmed.
