The Pilgrimage is a 1987 novel by Brazilian writer Paulo Coelho. It's a recollection of Paulo's experiences on the Camino de Santiago and his personal quest to find his 'sword' as a symbol of his acceptance into a religious order.
Importantly, the book isn't a guidebook for the Camino. Rather, it's part adventure story, part treatise on personal self-discovery.
Here's my selection of 10 things we can learn from The Pilgrimage about the Camino de Santiago and life itself.
Lesson Timestamps (in case you want to rewatch a certain part).
1. 1:06 "... strange Road to Santiago."
2. 2:32 "... adventure of traveling toward the unknown."
3. 3:58 "When you travel, you experience in a very practical way, the act of rebirth."
4. 5:24 "Even if I were not able to find my sword, the pilgrimage along the Road to Santiago was going to help me find myself."
6. 6:59 "In the life on the Road to Santiago, certain things happen that are beyond our control."
7. 8:20 "Teaching is only demonstrating that it is possible. Learning is making it possible for yourself."
8. 9:17 "The only way to make the right decision is to know what the wrong decision is."
9. 10:17 "I was feeling very calm, and I was more and more aware of the importance of the Road to Santiago in my life and the question of what I was going to do after the pilgrimage had ended."
10. 11:13 "Life always teaches us more than the Road to Santiago does."
11. 12:19 Conclusion
