The Forward Seamen’s Union of India said the 35-year-old crew member became seriously ill several days before his death, and alleged that delays in medical evacuation may have contributed to the outcome. The delays have been so severe that the crew have been forced to resort to using cold water bottles just to stop Uirthanathan’s remains from decomposing, the Union said.

The political fallout looks set to be great. Opposition leaders have called for a strong government response to recent incidents involving Indian seafarers in the Gulf, and for PM Modi to raise the issue personally with Donald Trump at the G7. Indian authorities said they are closely monitoring the situation and have advised sailors and shipping companies in the region to follow heightened security measures in the meantime.
