Beatles '64 follows the fab four on their arrival to The United States at John F Kennedy Airport, New York City on Februrary 7th 1964. Prior to this, The Beatles (John Lennon, Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr and George Harrison) had become the biggest act in Europe with #1 hits like Love Me Do, Please Please Me, From Me to You and She Loves You. They didn't hit in America until the release of I Want to Hold Your Hand in late 1963 when it hit number 1. This was also following the assassination of President Kennedy when the country was in mourning. The Beatles provided some new excitement as Beatlemania swept the nation and the band was greeted by hundreds of screaming girls at the airport. What followed was an exciting couple weeks in America, from humorous press conferences, chats with Murray the K on the radio, and of course the famous appearance on the Ed Sullivan Show on February 9th 1964. It was one of the most watched programs in the history of American television where The Beatles performed All My Loving, Til There Was You, She Loves You, I Saw Here Standing There and I Want to Hold Your Hand. Full concerts at The Washington Coliseum and New York's Carnegie Hall were well received and they would appear on The Ed Sullivan Show a second time in Miami Florida on February 16th, where they also performed This Boy and From me to You. February 23, The Ed Sullivan Show would run a pre-taped 3rd broadcast where The Beatles also performed Twist and Shout and Please Please Me. The Beatles would return to Ed's show one final time on August 14th 1965 to perform I Feel Fine, I'm Down, and Act Naturally, Ticket to Ride, Yesterday, and Help! Back in 64, The Beatles were filmed by Albert and David Maysles who produced a documentary of their first U.S. Visit. Beatles '64, directed by David Tedeschi, expands on that footage and adds new interviews with Paul and Ringo, along with other famous musicians and fans.
Following this visit, The Beatles' fame would only continue to grow from appearing in the films A Hard Day's Night and Help, releasing the albums Rubber Soul, Revolver, Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Heart's Club Band, Magical Mystery Tour, The White Album, Let it Be and Abbey Road, becoming the first band to perform in a stadium at Shea Stadium and numerous accolades. The Beatles would officially break up in 1970 where they all had successful solo careers - John Lennon's Imagine, George Harrison's All Things Must Pass, Paul McCartney and Wings' Band on the Run and Ringo's self-titled album. John was murdered in 1980 while George died of cancer in 2001. Their legacy remains one of the most loved in classic rock history.
