You hate jump scares. I know, I get it! They're frustrating! But please at least give me a chance to convince you that jump scares are good and important and have a place in horror AND IN YOUR HEART.
You see, jump scares weren't always so reviled-- no indeed, once upon a time they were classy, created for classic cinema like Citizen Kane, if you'd believe it! Now they're the cheapest, schlocky-est thrill in the theater. But how did we get here? Is it because of elevated horror or prestige horror?
Well, it's not exactly because of the likes of Get Out or The Babadook, but honestly.... elevated horror movies aren't helping. Jump scares are disappearing from horror, and you know what? The scariest jump scare is the one that never comes!
