Why does spasticity happen?
It’s primarily the result of two things:
1) The spinal stretch reflex becomes hyperactive. This is a reflex that is usually a protective mechanism which tells a muscle to contract if it lengthens too far. But after the stroke, this reflex is constantly causing muscle contraction because the signals from the brain are interrupted.
2) The brain’s ability to communicate with the muscles is interrupted. It’s like trying to communicate via radio but there’s a lot of static interference so your message can’t be heard.
So, this results in muscles contracting when they shouldn’t and the brain is unable to tell the muscles to relax because of the communication disruption.
