Planting a lotus flower is simple enough but at the same time you have to be very careful in handling the rhizome as they are very delicate.

I show you all the steps to successfully plant a lotus rhizome in a pot to then be placed in a pond or lake.

Lotus's bring a different structural element in the water feature that's different from lilies as the flowers stand out of the water.

Lotuses can take over a stretch of water as they have vigorous growth so its always recommended to plant the rhizome's in a pot.

You could start of planting a lotus in a pot of 20 lts but as they grow so fast your end up having to repot after the first year so I bought the biggest pots I could find at the best price.

Lotus flowers prefer a clay/sandy soil and I filled the pots up to 10 cms leaving 20 cms of water above the level of soil, its actually recommended to have 15 cms of soil and 30 cms of water above the lotus rhyzome but as I was draining the lake soon I wanted to create its very own pond to grow in within the bigger pots.

Lotus flowers are very hungry plants so make sure you give them plenty of food within the soil and when it comes to planting just lay the rhizome on the top of the soil and either pin it down or as I did place a bit of broken flower pot over it to keep it in contact with the soil.

Once it starts to grow, roots are sent down into the soil while shoots go up to form the leaves and then the flower stalks.

While I have the lake full, I moved the pots so that the lotus rhizomes had 30 cms of water above them.

You can see at the end of this video that the lake was emptied and how well my lotus flowers are doing in their second season.
