Brian McVeigh talks about Metaphors: The Building Blocks of Mind and Worldviews
Despite a significant amount of research on the importance of metaphors, some still view them as mere ornamental language or clever tricks of the mind. However, metaphors play a pivotal role in how we understand the world around us as well as the workings of our own mind. Metaphors are a fundamental process of mentation, not a decorative extra. Their deployment can be described as our capability to “step back” from the natural and social environment and search out its familiar features and employ these to explain the unfamiliar and generate “as if” knowledge forms. Conscious interiority (subjective introspectable self-awareness) itself has been historically constructed from metaphors, which have expanded our psychological toolkit in response to social complexity. Metaphors can be categorized into two types: (1) figurative, describing how an individual interprets tropic experiences as a figure of speech—the stuff of poetry, song, and playful talk; and (2) literal, describing how an individual interprets tropic experiences as being actually true. Literal metaphors can fundamentally shape the way we view the world, forming “master” or “foundational” metaphors. We need to pay attention to literal metaphors, since many foundational ideas rest upon an array of unquestioned, nonconscious habits of thought. Within a psychotherapeutic setting, metaphors used by patients to describe their predicament provide a window into their problems and worldview. The creative use of metaphors also encourages patients to reconceptualize and reconsider their problems from a new angle.
