Last Train To Clarksville was written for The Monkees by songwriting duo Tommy Boyce and Bobby Hart and recorded at RCA Victor studio B in California on July 25, 1966. The song was featured in seven episodes of the TV series; more than any other Monkees song.
Boyce and Hart's backing band, Candy Store Prophets, performed the instrumental work for the song.
THE GUITAR PARTS:
Tommy Boyce played acoustic on this song. If you listen in stereo, his guitar can be heard on the left channel. His playing is quite straightforward as it is nothing more than providing chords. I always thought the strumming pattern he chose sounded like a train lol.
Session guitarist Louis Shelton played the riff that goes throughout most of the song on a Fender Telecaster. According to Tommy Boyce, the riff was a attempt to emulate a clearly identifiable riff that The Beatles has used such as I Feel Fine, Day Tripper and Paperback Writer.
At 1:11, he uses a root position G major chord and slides down to an Fadd9
The solo involves a sort of alternating "rolling" pattern between different inversions of F an G. At 1:56 he seems to play an A minor triad where the F chord would be.
Gerry Mcgee provided the second guitar underneath the solo and outtro. What he's doing is based around a 2nd inversion G chord on the 12th fret. Instead of playing the full chord, he only uses the III and V and throws in the suspended IV every other measure.
Thats it!
