We’ve all seen the movies—everyone is covered in mud, the streets are a disaster, and nobody has touched a drop of water in years. It’s a great aesthetic for a gritty film, but is it actually true?
It turns out that medieval people weren't nearly as gross as Hollywood wants you to think. They didn't have deodorant or power showers, but they weren't just sitting around rotting in their own sweat either. From public bathhouses (that got surprisingly rowdy) to the obsession with clean white linen, hygiene in the Middle Ages was actually a huge deal—it just worked differently than ours.
In this video, we are looking at how people actually handled dirt, what they used for soap, and why the Black Death actually made people afraid of taking baths.
If you've ever wondered if you could survive the smell of a 14th-century city, this is for you.
