SWFL Eagles 1-5-26. E26's FIRST PELLET CASTING, a GNARLY ONE; 18 Days Old! F23 Delivers Fresh Fish!

Описание: Video opens with F23 flying E on the foggy morning. She returns, then flies E again. F23 returns from the NW with a fresh fish. While she was off the nest, E26 shows signs of needing to cast. F23 conducts a feeding for E26 with her fresh catch. E26 shows signs of needing to cast. F23 keeps offering bites, and E26 keeps taking them. E26 starts trying to cast, and egests fish from the feeding. ( The pellet is working it's way out, and the fish cannot go down.) F23 recycles the fish and feeds it to E26. E26 again tries to cast the pellet, this time getting it out. F23 moves it to the side, and it may not have been completely out when she moved it.

F23 continues the feeding, and E26 takes bites. E26 starts trying to cast a second pellet. It is not all the way out, and E26 tries to swallow it. Between the head shaking and swallowing, the second pellet starts breaking apart, and E26 is able to expel it. The feeding is over, and E26 looks better off after all the work to get the pellets out.

CamOps provides a close view of E26, crop and feet, from overhead. CamOps then takes a close look at the pellets. F23 starts another feeding, and a short clip from that feeding is included. The next segment is from earlier in the morning. There was a pellet in the nest cup at first light, after F23 rose from brooding. It appears E26 may have cast another pellet earlier. I did not see it in my footage, so it may have happened overnight. Since it was not seen, I cannot be sure if it was from E26. F23 moved it out of the nest cup area. Video closes with E26 moving over by Mom. Time stamps below, if interested.

What is a pellet? - Pellets are formed in the gizzard from indigestible material (feather, fur, bills, claws, plant material), then travel back up from the gizzard/ventriculus, through the proventriculus. A coating of mucus facilitates the travel of the pellet through the esophagus to be cast/egested. Pellets are typically cast in the morning, but can be cast anytime.
