In this meeting, we tie a version of Jeff Guerin’s Tan Bead Belly. Jeff is a long-time fly designer and guide on Arkansas' Little Missouri River, and this is one of Jeff's staple patterns for the river. It is a buggy pattern that can imitate caddis, March Browns, and other insects. It is a bit unusual in that the glass bead is tied near the middle of the hook to imitate an air bubble, rather than behind the hook eye as in a typical beadhead fly. It has classic soft hackle lines and should fish well under an indicator, stripped, or pulled just below the surface. The version we tie has similar, though not exactly the same, materials as Jeff's.
Materials:
Thread: Tan or brown in 70 denier
Hook: 12-18 long-shank emerger or caddis pupae hook (#14 Firehole 315 in video). Sub a long-shank general-purpose hook, e.g., Tiemco 200R or similar.
Bead: Tan/clear glass bead sized to hook (In video, Czech Glass Bead 8/0 Seed Bead in Crystal/Brown) - substitute a brass or tungsten bead in silver, brass, or copper colors for weight
Body: Hare's Ear/Hare's Ear Plus or rabbit dubbing in natural or tan colors
Hackle: Partridge soft hackle or other soft hackle sized to hook
