During a partial lunar eclipse, the Moon traverses only a segment of Earth's complete shadow, known as the umbra. This celestial event results in a discernible darkening of a portion of the lunar disk, as direct sunlight is partially obstructed.
Conversely, a total lunar eclipse manifests when the Sun, Earth, and Moon achieve an exact alignment, causing the Moon to be fully enveloped within Earth's umbra. Rather than disappearing from view, the Moon acquires a striking reddish or coppery hue. This distinctive coloration is attributed to Earth's atmosphere scattering shorter wavelength blue light (a phenomenon known as Rayleigh scattering), allowing longer wavelength red and orange light to refract around our planet and illuminate the lunar surface.
