College transition expert Susan Woods explains how to declare a disability such as autism in college to begin receiving accommodations. More resources at: http://www.stairwaytostem.org.
At STS, we know this is a big consideration: as your student moves from high school to college, they may be unsure whether they want to disclose their autism, and there are many resources on STS that consider some of the advantages of doing so.
If your autistic young adult wants to disclose or is thinking about it, the best place to begin is by looking on the college website to learn more about the process, which usually begins by your student filling out a form to declare a disability.
From there, students need to have documents to back up their declaration. Susan Woods talks about “source documents,” or the reports, evaluations, and assessments that led to your student receiving IEP or 504 support in high school.
At that point, your student and someone from the Disabilities Services Office (DSO) (or the related office on your student’s campus) will schedule a meeting to go over the form and documentation to determine what accommodations would best support college learning.
Because this meeting takes place between your student and the DSO counselor, it’s a good idea for your student to be comfortable talking about their autism, what supports they had in high school, and why they had them.
