Today, it’s all about hats in our Artifact Corner!

Hi everyone and welcome back to another artifact corner. Today we will be looking at this beautiful silk bonnet from the 1850’s. The hat holds it’s shape with a metal frame that the silk is gathered over, and also has buckram to stiffen the cap. It’s lined with a silk netting. It has a lovely spray of velvet flowers that have been sewn to the front edge of the cap. Bonnets were not only fashionable, but also practical. It helped to shield your face from the sun, and also from rain, and was a way to keep your hair in place during windy conditions. The fashions for women’s hats changed dramatically during the 1800’s, so let’s learn a bit more about women’s hats in the 19th Century.
