Before the rise of Angkor, there was Chenla — a powerful inland kingdom that transformed Khmer civilization forever.
In the 6th–7th centuries, Chenla replaced Funan and shifted power from sea trade to land and agriculture. Its kings built sacred temples at Sambor Prei Kuk, carved royal inscriptions, and introduced a land-centered vision of divine kingship.
Without Chenla, the Angkor Empire could never have emerged.
