This is number sixteen in the series of intermediate character pieces.
One of my earliest Classical music purchases was a Great Performances CD of Pachelbel's Canon and other Baroque favorites. On this recording was the Sarabande from Handel's keyboard suite in d minor - HWV 437. Fast forward some 45 years and I decided to write this piece as an homage to the great George Frideric Handel.
There is a feeling of great solemnity to this prelude, and the tempo must not be rushed.
The beloved king has died and the people have come to pay their final respects. The casket is brought out slowly and laid on the bier. A bell can be heard tolling in the background. The pallbearers step back to give the immediate family a chance to say their last goodbyes before the mourning public begin to process forward. Their cries of grief are heard throughout the piece as the great outpouring of sorrow continues unabated. There will be a new dawn tomorrow, but for now the sun has set on a life well-lived.
