Dr. Lucenia Ortiz currently serves as Chair on the Board of Directors of the Multicultural Health Brokers (MCHB) Cooperative since 2020. From her experience as a newcomer from the Philippines in 1994, she developed a passion and commitment to work with culturally diverse communities in creating opportunities to support their advancement in their new homeland.

As North America’s first Human Rights City, designated by the United Nations Development Programme, Edmonton has long been a hub for people working to educate, advance and protect human rights. This work has a long history that is rooted in the leadership of community activists who began their efforts in the 60s and 70s on important issues such as Indigenous rights, women’s rights, environmentalism and anti-war peace action. Yet, despite its indelible impact on the current generation of activists, this history had yet to be documented and celebrated.
Now with the project "Edmonton as a Human Rights City: A Living Legacy of Activism," these stories are now being recorded to inspire future generations of engaged citizens.
This year-long project was inspired by Patti Hartnagel and Michael Kalmanovitch and facilitated by the John Humphrey Centre for Peace and Human Rights, in collaboration with the City of Edmonton Archives.
We pay great respect to and appreciate the support of the New Horizons for Seniors Program with the Government of Canada, the Alberta Heritage Awareness Grant, and the Edmonton Heritage Council.
