In this video, Ray from Sahara Coins and Precious Metals talks about the 1955 Double Dye Lincoln set. This is a beautiful and rare coin that is commonly counterfeited. The history behind the penny is there are multiple blows that are done to create a coin. However, on this set the second blow was misaligned. This affected the appearance of the date and inscription on the coin. Approximately 40,000 were made during one night shift for the Philadelphia mint. It was introduced into circulation through cigarette machines. During that time, cigarettes cost 24 cents per pack, but vending machines only took quarters. So to give change, each cigarette pack would return two pennies to the buyer.
When examining authentic 1955 Double, you need to pay close attention to clarity and strike on the coin. Lettering and the dates are the devices. You will notice the thickness between the rim and the flatness of the inscriptions is a great indication of a counterfeit. You can see that most of the time the phrase "In God We Trust" is too close to the rim on counterfeit coins. The letter format in the phrase is also not as clean. You will notice a weakness and flatness in the words. Typically, the words on an authentic coin have a strong strike.
There is also a lot of details lacking on Lincoln himself, especially in his nostrils and his eyes. The spacing of the word “Liberty” is often off and the “L” on fake coins is often touching the rim, which is not normal for authentic pennies of this type. The lettering is mushy with less detail versus a real coin.
However, all the counterfeit traits you see in this video is not the same for all fake coins. The things mentioned in the video is a common diagnostic. Lastly, the coin itself will lack a polish finish that most coins have. It will appear dull.
