Broad Peak 2026 Avalanche Final Update : the rescue and recovery operation on Broad Peak has now been halted for the season following the devastating avalanche that killed 10 climbers.

In this final Broad Peak 2026 report, we begin in Kathmandu, Nepal, where Pur Bahadur “Yukta” Gurung has been cremated according to Hindu rites at Swayambhunath, surrounded by family, friends, fellow climbers and supporters.

We then return to Broad Peak for the extraordinary story of the men who risked their own lives to recover those lost in the July 30 avalanche.

The recovery teams faced some of the most dangerous conditions imaginable — steep avalanche terrain, rockfall, crevasses and further avalanches while attempting to reach and bring down the climbers.

According to the detailed rescue accounts, rescuers Pemba Dorje Sherpa and Speed Dai attempted to reach Nawang Thindu Sherpa, carrying hundreds of metres of rope and climbing directly into the avalanche zone. Despite repeated attempts, dangerous terrain and continuing avalanche activity ultimately forced them to turn back.

We also examine the final recovery effort involving Mingma G, the Sherpa and Pakistani rescue teams, Pakistan Army helicopter operations, and the painstaking effort to bring the recovered climbers down to Broad Peak Base Camp and onward to Skardu.

Eight of the ten climbers were reported recovered in some form, while Sohail Sakhi and Nawang Thindu Sherpa remained unrecovered. Additional remains associated with Mallory Geis are also reported to remain on Broad Peak, meaning the mountain may still hold remains connected to three of those lost.

This report also pays tribute to the rescuers who voluntarily returned to the same dangerous mountain where ten people had already died.

Broad Peak stands at more than 8,000 metres in Pakistan’s Karakoram range and is one of the world’s fourteen 8,000-metre peaks. The July 2026 avalanche became one of the most significant mountaineering tragedies of the season.
