STORYLINE
Around two hundred lawyers in the central Pakistani city of Multan fought pitched battles on the streets with police on Thursday, as a protest against President Pervez Musharraf turned nasty.
AP Television filmed the clashes, during which both sides beat each other with heavy sticks, and injuries were sustained by both sides.
Musharraf declared a state of emergency on November 3 and sacked most of the Supreme Court justices, just before they were to rule on the validity of his October re-election.
Musharraf has stacked the Supreme Court with loyalists, who have promptly dismissed all complaints against the
former general's election.
Lawyers have called Musharraf's moves an attack on the judiciary's independence, and have boycotted court proceedings in various cities, hoisted black flags and staged rallies, including in Multan.
Malik Waqir Haider, a senior lawyer, blamed the police for the trouble in Multan.
"They have assaulted without any reason. The lawyers have a noble cause, that is for the restoration of judiciary," he said.
The votes are to decide Pakistan's national and provincial assemblies.
