John Martin-Harvey went down in theater history as the last great romantic of the Victorian era. He began his career in the shadow of the legendary Henry Irving at the Lyceum Theatre and spent years absorbing the secrets of the old school. The actor patiently waited for his moment until fate gifted him the role of a lifetime. It was the play The Only Way based on Charles Dickens' novel A Tale of Two Cities. The role of the noble and sacrificial Sydney Carton became his calling card and his curse at the same time.
Martin-Harvey played this character more than five thousand times on stages around the world. Audiences wept every night when he delivered the final monologue before the guillotine. He became an idol for a public that craved big feelings and heroic deeds. In 1921 King George V knighted him for services to drama. Sir John was not just an actor but a true leader of his own company who took theater to the most remote corners of the empire.
His acting style might seem too theatrical and grandiose to the modern viewer. However for his time he was an absolute master who knew how to hold a room in suspense with a single glance. Sir John Martin-Harvey died in 1944 and took the era of great actor-managers with him. He remains in memory as the man who proved that the stage is a place for magic and sublime emotions.
